Pietro Annigoni lavora per quasi sei secoli, testimoniando la realtà cangiante della storia contemporanea. Viene perceppito come l'erede alla tradizione dei grandi ritrattisti del Rinascimento.

Fu chiamato per raffigurare icone come sua Maestà la Regina Elizabetta II dell'Inghilterra. Ciò che caratterizza il lavoro di Annigoni è la drammaturgia che emerge soprattutto nei ritratti.

Non hanno mai l'aria di essere dei soggetti qualsiasi, ma attori, personaggi.





Come se l'ultimo dei loro pensieri fosse star lì a posare per un quadro, sempre intenti a fare altro, sembrano interrotti dal pittore durante un pensiero, forse una preoccupazione. Il suo stile riflette un atteggiamento eclettico. C'è un poco di Dalì nei suoi sfondi surreali.

Si intravede Caravaggio nel chiaroscuro di alcune opere. E anche Maxfield Parrish nella leggerezza dei suoi volti femminili. Il museo alla Villa Bardini, al cui allestimento hanno fornito un prezioso contributo anche i figli e la vedova dell'artista, rappresenta la più grande collezione al mondo dell'opera di Pietro Annigoni. Pietro Annigoni's work spanned sixty years of contemporary history. He was the heir apparent to the great portrait artists of the Renaissance, and called to create the likeness of icons such as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England. His style reflects an even more cosmopolitan approach.

There's a bit of Dalì in some surreal backdrops. Hints of Caravaggio with the sharp contrasts of some pieces. And even a touch of Maxfield Parrish in the lightness and ethereal nature of some female faces. What distinguishes Annigoni's work is the drama in his portraits.


These are not subjects, these are actors, characters. Persons not offering themselves up to be viewed in the style of a Bronzino, but almost interrupted. Caught in the act of thinking, imagining, or discovering.



This dramatic tension makes the paintings come alive, and renders the artist's work unmistakably modern.
