Da quando esiste la moneta esistono coloro che tentano di falsificarla. Più la zecca dello Stato si ingegna per trovare metodi di anticontraffazione, più le tecniche di falsificazione si affinano. Ma se si conosce, il trucco diventa il segreto di Pulcinella.

Al Museo Archeologico di Firenze è in corso una mostra che ha preso spunto da una recente importante operazione della Polizia Valutaria di Roma denominata Operazione Benjamin dal nome di uno dei padri fondatori degli Stati Uniti ritratto sulla banconota da 100 dollari.

Insieme alla refurtiva, la Guardia di Finanza ha allestito un percorso che permette di farsi un'idea più precisa dei metodi di contraffazione dei mezzi di pagamento, come si dice in linguaggio tecnico. Non solo banconote insomma ma monete, carte di credito, bancomat.

Dai più antichi, quando era la qualità del materiale usato a far nascere sospetti (il vecchio metodo di "assaggiare" una monetina con i denti aveva un suo perché), ai più moderni, difficilmente smascherabili da occhi inesperti.

In effetti il confronto tra veri e falsi è a volte sconfortante. Altre, semplicemente l'occasione per ritrovare banconote che molti si ricorderanno con affetto.

Tra gli episodi storici ricordati, la vicenda dell'emigrante italiano, tipografo in patria, che una volta sbarcato in America fu subito reclutato dalla malavita e convertito in falsario. O i falsi "ufficiali" come quello dell'operazione Bernhard messa in piedi nel campo di concentramento di Sachsausen allo scopo di destabilizzare il nemico immettendo nel mercato dollari e sterline contraffatte.

Since money has existed there have been those who have tried to counterfeit it. The more the State tries to find methods to prevent this curse, the more the falsification technologies improve.

An exhibit at the Archaeological Museum of Florence is now on display due to the recent and important operation of the Currency Police of Rome named Operation Benjamin. The name comes from one of the founding fathers of the United States portraied on the 100 dollar bill.

With the counterfeited money, the Guardia di Finanza has created an exhibit that allows one to get a more precise idea of the methods used in falsifying means of payment. Not only cash but also coins, credit cards, and automated banking machines.

From the oldest counterfeits, when it was the quality of the material used to make the fakes (the old method of "tasting" a coin with one's teeth had reason), to the most modern methods, which are difficult to see with inexperienced eyes.

Seeing the slight difference between the real and the fake is at times discouraging. For Italians is also the occasion to go back to the old Liras.

There i salso the story of the Italian emigrant, a thypographer in the homeland, that as soon as he arrived in America was recruited by the local Mafia and converted into a counterfeiter.
Then there are the "official" fakes like the operation that took place in the Sachsausen concentration camp. Its purpose was to destabilize the enemy by introducing these counterfeited dollars and pounds into the market.
